In college one of my favorite musical groups was the pop duo “Wham!” I spent countless evenings at clubs happily dancing to songs like “Wake Me Up Before you Go,” and “Everything She Wants.” So I was thrilled to discover that Netflix has a new documentary out on the band.
About half way through the documentary, lead singer George Michael makes a comment about how he comes up with his music.
“When I write a melody in my head something in the back of my neck just knows that I’ve hit it. It’s almost like it was already there, but you hadn’t spotted where it was yet. It’s almost like it comes to you fully formed, and you just pulled it out of nowhere. And the feeling that you have that makes you shiver is that you found it.” – George Michael
I love this quote because it so clearly articulates one of the results of being in alignment with the Divine. Stepping into the flow can cause insights to just appear. As Michael says, “It’s almost like it was already there… and you just pulled it out of nowhere.” When in alignment, knowledge, insights, inspiration, creativity, and more, come from beyond us and we just tap into it.
“See, the Lord has … filled him with a divine spirit, with ability, intelligence, and knowledge, and with every kind of skill … in every kind of artistic craft.” – Exodus 35:30-33
When speaking about creativity, Moses explains that creativity comes from a divine spirit. The greatest creativity isn’t about thinking really hard with our brains, but stepping into God’s flow and opening ourselves up to the Spirit. Great things just enter into our consciousness.
Have you ever noticed some amazing insight just coming to you out of nowhere? Some creativity? Some wisdom? Some knowledge? You don’t think through a series of thoughts and laboriously come to a conclusion, but rather the whole thing appears at once in your mind fully formed? And you feel it in your body that you are tapping into something beyond yourself? This is the inspiration coming from being in alignment with the Divine.

I have a busy few weeks coming up preparing my youngest for, and settling him into, his sophomore year of college, as well as preparing for and speaking at the Annual Conference for the International Association for Near-Death Studies in DC. This is all to say that I will be taking a three week hiatus from “Jesus and the Enchanted Cosmos” as I focus on these busy but joyful events. My next post after today will be on Tuesday, September 12.
I am honored to be a speaker this year at the International Association for Near-Death Studies annual conference. My talk is entitled, "How a Series of Mystical Experiences Called me to the Priesthood, a Life of Joy with God, and Spiritual Service to Others." I am also the moderator for the Panel discussion entitled, "Spiritual AND Religious: Bridging Mystical Experiences and Christianity." You can register to attend either in person or online.

Stephanie, I continue to enjoy your thoughts here even though I rarely respond. I’m so glad we reconnected. This piece “hit home” for me and I loved the way you wrote about it. Thank you! Good luck with your son and your speaking engagement. I know that both will go very well!

Yes! I loved the wham doc and had a similar thought. Reminds me too of Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert.
